This will be my new painting. I like to introduce Tiffany Bisconer, who is a very talented Belly Dancer. The planning for this painting started I think back in October and Tiffany has been a wonderful sport about my 1001 requests on reference material. Please go over to my Orientalist Gallery Blog and watch her do the Goblet Dance ~ it's unbelievable...
ATTENTION!
This will be an interactive project and I will give a drawing of one of the objects in the painting to the person who can come up with a cool title for this painting. So as you visit and see the developments, start thinking of some titles. All you have to do is leave me a comment on any post that says "Tiffany". When the painting is completed the person whose name suggestion I will choose, will receive the drawing. If several people should suggest the same name, I will have my son draw a name and announce the winner. Good luck!

In most Orientalist paintings harem girls, odalisques or dancers are shown in a frontal position or from a side view and therefore I wanted to try something different. Tiffany obliged and we ended up with a set of seated poses showing her back. After a series of quick sketches, I determine where I want my main subject to be on the canvas. I chose a triangular composition and made sure that everything about Tiffany lined up within the designated areas. You might still see some of the erased lines.
To create the illusion that Tiffany is a harem dancer, I had to create a proper setting for her and offer clues within the painting to allure to who she might be. Going through magazines, books and after a lot of web surfing, I found more stuff I wanted to buy for my home than to use in the painting. LOL!
Eventually I found a couple of things and had fun decorating without spending a penny!
The props:
Just MoroccoThis Moorish Cordoba ($1,3000) sofa had a nice design to it and I love the colors. Just Morocco has beautiful things, so colorful. Oh, how I wish I could travel to Morocco....

One of their rooms had great curtains, so I picked those up as well. I took out the sofa in Photoshop, but I still have to fix the folds of the curtain and adjust the color.

Water pipe (Nargil) and Mother of Pearl inlaid table courtesy of Ange Tissier's painting "Une Algérienne et son esclave"
I love to copy Old Master's work, but there never seems to be enough time. So I do the next best thing and that's learn from their compositions and copy small pieces here and there to learn something new.

I noticed that in a lot of Orientalist paintings the artists showed off their skills at painting fur. I have never done that, so it's about time to pay homage to Izart's 'La Tasse de Cafe' and copy the rug. This will be a good learning experience, since the area is small.
Arabic Tabla, Dumbek and RiqqI have done a montage of all these items to scale in Photoshop and have sent the preliminary design to Tiffany for approval. She liked everything and this means the painting is a go. Now that all the elements are in place, I will do a full on drawing to work out a couple of things such as lighting, proper folds for curtain, perspective issues, etc.

My suggestion for a title is this: "Salome Waits...." There would be a mystery about what exactly she is waiting for. Waiting to dance? Waiting for him? Waiting for the head of John the Baptist?
Salome, as you might recall, was the girl in the bible who, at her mother's request, (belly?) danced for King Herod in exchange for the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter. You can read more about her in the Bible and in art and literature here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salome In general, the name Salome has come to mean seductress, which is what belly dancers do for Sultan.
There is also a gruesome picture by Titian of Salome at this Web site. You'd be in good company for subject matter.

Enzie, I don't have a name for it yet, but will be thinking about it. I love seeing how you progress with your work, the drawing and the pre-painting. In the meantime I've posted a link to your blog, hope you don't mind me borrowing this photo.
Thanks Bobbie, I appreciate it very much.
"In Dance, a Life"
Your blogs are lovely - I have visted before and left comments.
I respect nyoru dedication,m expertise and academic zeal. Kind regards,
Thanks John!
Hi Enzie, I am floored by your amazing art work. As a Lebanese-American who has grown up with these images in my head, I am very touched by your loving rendition of a subject so dear to my heart. I love Orientalist art because there is such a promise of beauty and sensuality. And your art translates these emotions very well. I am so glad I found you (thanks to Bobbie :)
My suggestion? "Omnia" ..Why? Because it means something between wishing and hope, of a promise of a beautiful future... (I am jet lagged at the moment and will come back with further suggestions too).
And btw, if you need anything written (or translated) from Arabic, just drop me a line :)
GREAT WORK!
Neda, welcome and thank you for your kind words regarding my work and the offer for translation.
Everyone is coming up with such cool ideas for names!

Good Luck!
Regarding the work with Tiffany - "Waiting to perform." To me this works on a number of levels in the Middle Eastern cultures - performing, i.e. the belly dance; waiting, i.e. the role of women in society - waiting for a man to agree/approve/accept - and perform, i.e. to satisfy or please the man - which in that culture is tantamount to a woman's role in a man's life.
This is my first time here. Your work is amazing. Beautiful.
Beautiful! Almost everybody has come up with the same thing that I thought of when I first saw the painting. Waiting for something. :) My title would be Waiting to Exhale.
I am loving all these cool ideas...
Work is going forward at a steady pace and I am pushing to get the painting done by the end of February.
Hi Enzie,
I am thinking "Anticipation" is a good title. Maybe she is a young girl who is about to perform for the first time in front of a powerful ruler. She is excited to be chosen yet fearful of making a mistake, or offending...
Just a thought
I'll take a shot at it...
"Framed Iridescence"
The drapery frames her and she, plus her surroundings, personify the meaning of iridescence.
